How do people profit by getting in early?

I heard someone share how he made huge profits on tokens like PNUT and ACT by getting in super early. For example, he bought ACT at listing and got a 30x return. I know from experience that buying at listing doesn’t always work—learned that the hard way as a beginner—but it clearly worked for him.

 

Even with PNUT, where I bought early, he still managed to make 17x more. Is there a trick or strategy behind this? Would love to know your thoughts. Thanks!
