What causes addiction?

Nothing leads to addiction, but there are several factors that increase the risk of addiction, such as: genetics, environment, psychological factors. But as to whether can addiction be genetic scientists are still debating, because there are cases where the child acts exactly the opposite of how the parents behaved.

Some people do not realize that alcohol or drugs can lead to irreversible consequences. Drugs can become addictive after the first use, but many people don't know this. A colleague of mine was treated for drug addiction, but he has been living a healthy lifestyle for several years. You can read about the harms of cocaine and drug treatment here: https://fherehab.com/cocaine/about-cocaine/ This information should be shared with our children, friends, and colleagues to warn them about the dangers of this drugs.

I see it's been a while since this topic was discussed, but I just want to ask—do you think addiction is more about personal choice or external influences? I’ve seen people debate whether it's mainly psychological or if physical dependence is the bigger issue. Also, has anyone here had success in breaking habits by changing their environment rather than relying solely on willpower? Would love to hear more thoughts on this.

A lot of people underestimate how tough it is to break free from addiction. It's not just about willpower—there are chemical changes in the brain that make quitting feel impossible. Support and expert guidance can really make a difference. Places like https://www.abbeycarefoundation.com/ www.abbeycarefoundation.com focus on real solutions that help rewire those patterns and give people the tools to recover. Nobody should have to do it alone; the right help changes everything.

Addiction stems from a mix of psychological, biological, and social factors. The brain’s reward system plays a big role, reinforcing behaviors that bring pleasure, even when harmful. Stress, trauma, and genetics can also contribute.
