What are forex spreads?

When you begin trading, you’ll notice that you’re given a ‘bid’ (or ‘sell’) price and an ‘ask’ (or ‘buy’) price. The ‘bid’ is the price at which you sell the base currency, and the ‘ask’ is the price at which you buy the base currency. The difference between these two prices is what we call the spread.

When a trade is opened, there are always third parties who facilitate the opening and closing of that trade, like a bank or a liquidity provider. These third parties must make sure that there is an orderly flow of buy and sell orders, which means that they have to find a buyer for every seller and vice versa.

The third party is accepting the risk of a loss while facilitating the trade, thus the reason the third party will retain a part of each trade – that retained part is called the spread!

MetaTrader WebTrader Platform

One of the main benefits of working with MetaTrader products is the ease of operability that you’re given. So, why would it be any different with the MT4 web trader? Well, it isn’t! The platform itself is hosted by Metaquotes and then you can get the location or URL from your individual broker.

So, although it is accessed through a URL online, each URL for each broker will be different. It’s the same program but will be on your broker’s server. This means that you’ll need a trading account with the broker that you want to work with in order to access their specific version of the MetaTrader web trader.

This is slightly different to the MT4 desktop version in the way that you can simply log out of one broker account on and login with another, using the same program. With the MT4 web platform however, you’ll need to visit your specific broker’s Webtrader URL.

What is a Bond?
In simple terms, a bond is an agreement between a borrower and a lender, where a borrower finances a project by issuing a bond. Bonds, also known as treasuries or securities, are generally issued by governments. The issuer of a bond, or the ‘borrower’, sets the interest rate which is then paid to the investor. At the maturity of this bond the investor is then paid back their initial investment.

Unlike stocks, there’s no central exchange to buy and sell bonds. The bond market is an ‘over-the-counter’ market, which is much bigger than the stock market! It’s also important to note that, as a trader, you aren’t directly buying or selling the bond, you’re simply speculating about how the bond will appreciate or depreciate in value over time.

Margin & Leverage
Technically, leverage is where a trader has a large sum at their disposal while using a significantly smaller amount of their own funds. They effectively borrow the rest from their broker.

For example, if you’re trading with a 1:100 leverage, and you have $1,000 USD in your account, you’ve got $100,000 available for trading. Although this sounds like an insanely good opportunity, you must always remember that it’s a double-edged sword.

It may be easier to understand if you think of the margin as a deposit for the trade that you want to open and maintain. The broker that you’re trading with will keep a portion of your balance to cover the potential loss of that trade. Once you close the position, the margin will be put back into your account.

Wine

As a Mac user, you’ve probably already heard of wine. If not, we’ll be looking at what it is in this section.

Wine (an acronym for Wine Is Not an Emulator) is basically an ‘open-source’ program that lets you run windows software on Mac devices. We’ll talk more about emulators later on. Generally, its used on Linux however, it can even run software directly on a Mac without needing the Windows program to run in the background!

It’s important to know that later in the guide we provide you with a simple download that will allow you to run the MT4 on Mac. We’re giving you the information about Wine here to allow you to see how it functions.
