What are forex spreads?

When you begin trading, you’ll notice that you’re given a ‘bid’ (or ‘sell’) price and an ‘ask’ (or ‘buy’) price. The ‘bid’ is the price at which you sell the base currency, and the ‘ask’ is the price at which you buy the base currency. The difference between these two prices is what we call the spread.

When a trade is opened, there are always third parties who facilitate the opening and closing of that trade, like a bank or a liquidity provider. These third parties must make sure that there is an orderly flow of buy and sell orders, which means that they have to find a buyer for every seller and vice versa.

The third party is accepting the risk of a loss while facilitating the trade, thus the reason the third party will retain a part of each trade – that retained part is called the spread!

What is Leverage?

Technically, leverage is where a trader has a large sum at their disposal while using a significantly smaller amount of their own funds. They effectively borrow the rest from their broker.

For example, if you’re trading with a 1:100 leverage, and you have $1,000 USD in your account, you’ve got $100,000 available for trading. Although this sounds like an insanely good opportunity, you must always remember that it’s a double-edged sword.

When you trade with a larger amount, as leverage enables you to do, you can open bigger positions and potentially earn larger profits. However, with bigger positions you also have a higher risk whereby your losses could also be larger.

How Does
Copy Trading Work?
When you decide who you wish to follow, you simply begin to follow them, and their trades will be replicated in your account. If they open a trade, that same trade will be opened in your account, and should that trade be successful, yours will too!

The AutoTrade system was designed specifically to ensure smooth and correct mirror trading. When you subscribe to an AutoTrade provider, you can change the multiplier value (either at subscribing or afterwards in your management screen). Changing this value will show you immediately the hypothetical return and risk you could have based on the data gathered so far. A multiplier of value 1 means you're getting the same risk ratio as the provider.

Risk is the maximal drawdown of the subscribed systems - it ranges from 0% to 100%. When you adjust the multiplier of each system, you will notice the risk bar adjusting accordingly, showing you the total risk in real time.

Once the multiplier is set the system automatically will determine the size of trades on your account based on the chosen provider. The lower the multiplier value, the lower the risk, trade sizes and profit/loss. The higher the multiplier value, the higher the risk, trade sizes and profit/loss.

What is a Bond?
In simple terms, a bond is an agreement between a borrower and a lender, where a borrower finances a project by issuing a bond. Bonds, also known as treasuries or securities, are generally issued by governments. The issuer of a bond, or the ‘borrower’, sets the interest rate which is then paid to the investor. At the maturity of this bond the investor is then paid back their initial investment.

Unlike stocks, there’s no central exchange to buy and sell bonds. The bond market is an ‘over-the-counter’ market, which is much bigger than the stock market! It’s also important to note that, as a trader, you aren’t directly buying or selling the bond, you’re simply speculating about how the bond will appreciate or depreciate in value over time.

What is a VPS?

A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is your own private server hosted in the cloud or on the Internet – being on 24/7 and constantly online. It runs it’s own copy of an operating system (OS), but isn’t hosted on your computer, so your PC can operate freely, even when you’re not there.

A VPS allows you to run automated algorithmic strategies or ‘Expert Advisors’ (EAs) around the clock on a Remote Server, independently from your own computer and without any efforts from your side.

How does a VPS work?

The technology that enables a VPS is where one very powerful server is divided into multiple sections. Although the server as a whole is shared, your part of the virtual private server is only for your use, so you won't have to share CPU, RAM or any other data! Due to the fact that it doesn’t have any interference from other external sources, you’re able to have a continual connection.

The map below explains how the connectivity between your computer, the VPS and the MT4 trading server gives you constant access.

What is Forex?

Foreign exchange, or Forex for short, is quite simply a market where you’re able to exchange one currency for another. When you ‘sell’ a currency, there is a buyer for that currency somewhere else. Now, the exchange rate between those two currencies is what’s important when trading forex. The exchange rate is constantly fluctuating, and it’s these fluctuations that allow market speculators to earn from trading.

With a daily trade volume of $6.5 trillion dollars, the forex market itself is huge! It eclipses the likes of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) which, by comparison, has a trading volume of only $22.4 billion per day.

The Forex Market’s sheer size attracts a wide range of different participants, including Central Banks, Investment Managers, Hedge Funds, Corporations, Brokers and Retail Traders – with 90% of those market participants being currency speculators!

What are Precious Metals?
Precious metals like Gold and Silver are tradable instruments classed as a commodity, therefore making their price relatively uniform across the world.

Traders tend to use precious metals as ‘safe-haven’ assets which become more tradable as economic developments and political unrest cause increased volatility across other markets. Afterall, when adverse market conditions arise from war, recession, government debt issues etc, Gold retains its value whereas stocks and currencies are vulnerable to significant losses.

Gold and Silver are characteristically limited in supply, which means that they tend to be of higher value. Where Gold is used as the main safe-haven asset, Silver is typically used in industrial production. Therefore, it’s more susceptible to price fluctuations from changes in business conditions.
