Gold and silver are heading into the European open higher. Gold has now consolidated above the psychological $1800/oz level with a strong move on Sunday night. Elsewhere in the commodities complex, copper is 0.23% higher and spot WTI is 1% in the black. In terms of risk sentiment, the Nikkei 225 (-0.35%) and ASX (-0.06%) struggled but the Shanghai Composite traded well moving 0.20% higher. Futures heading into the European open as flat.

In doing so, the yellow metal rises the most in three days inside a bullish chart pattern ahead of the key US Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP). Gold prices cheer upbeat market sentiment and weaker US dollar to stay firmer. That said, the US Dollar Index (DXY) refreshed monthly low in Asia before recently paring the losses to 92.20. Firmer risk appetite could be linked to the softer catalysts for the US jobs report for August marked a soft NFP, versus 750K expected and 943K prior, pushing away the Fed tapering concerns. Also positive for the mood could be the receding hospitalization in the US and mixed numbers in Asia–Pacific, not to forget the vaccine optimism surrounding the UK. The Initial Jobless Claims and Continuing Claims eased from the market consensus for the week ended on August 27 Thursday and the four-week average of Initial Jobless Claims also declined from 366.75K to 355K. Previously, the ADP Employment Change and the employment component of the US ISM Manufacturing PMI both signaled a contraction in the US jobs and marked the need for further easy money policies. Additionally, talks of Japanese PM Yoshihide Suga’s resignation and the UK’s battle for the likely stringent virus-led lockdown in the future also portray the current risk appetite and underpin the EUR/USD bulls. That said, S&P 500 Futures rise 0.20% intraday, tracking the Wall Street benchmarks that closed mildly positive on Thursday whereas the US 10-year Treasury yields drop 0.4 basis points (bps) to 1.29% by the press time. Moving on, gold will cheer a likely weakness in the US jobs report for August as it cuts the odds of the Fed’s tapering. However, the key employment details are famous for delivering surprises and hence keep the traders on their toes. I have a question about the bid/ask spread with gold. As I understand it, some gold dealers buy gold at/above/below spot price and sell it for auction on eBay, then a lot of gold dealers buy gold from the public below spot. And then others buy gold and wait for the spot price to go up before selling. Others profit by selling numismatic gold (or other metal) coins. There are many different ways in which gold dealers buy and sell. But when it comes to the bid/ask spread, someone asked it perfectly: "Silver shows bid $17.97 and ask $18.03 plus I have seen a few sights give a bid and ask price for silver coins such as 90% halves. Can someone explain this to me? It seems like "bid" would be the buy price and "ask" would be the sell price but that does not makes sense as it would mean I should buy silver for $17.97 and sell it for $18.03 today which means $0.06 for my time and trouble..." I understand the "short sell" and "long position" terminology, however... How are you making a profit with such a small spread? Is the profit made based on the volume of gold you buy and sell? Please kindly don't answer if you're going to say "just buy gold and sit on it", "you don't qualify to start, you're just a newbie and it'll all be too over your head", "my advice: not to do it", or "you're better off doing this or that" or something else equally unhelpful. I merely just want to understand it better. I'm aware this may sound like a stupid question to some people, but all gold dealers are not born with knowledge about how the gold business works, everyone has to start somewhere as far as learning it goes. Hi Guys, I own two resturants in London and now I am looking into investing in Gold. However, having done some research, I don't think gold is getting lots of nice publicity lately and gold price continue to drop everyday. On the other hand, diamond is on fire. Yesterday's article by the Wall Street Journal makes me want more to invest in diamonds rather than gold. I know that gold stocks rise and fall and maybe before the year ends, it will be a hot investment again.
