They’re not only extremely toxic, they can actually harm the pipes in your home if you use them frequently. Try this safe and inexpensive method instead. Pack your drain with about 1/2 cup of baking soda, then pour in 1 cup of vinegar. Keep the drain covered for about 10 minutes, then flush it out with a teapot filled with boiling water. Bonus: the baking soda and boiling water also work as a drain freshener and help maintain the proper pH of your septic system.
