People themselves will soon become antennas for smartphones connectivity

According to the statement of researchers the connectivity between smartphones and data transmission will soon be possible via human bodies. Scientists from Queen's Institute of Electronics, Communications and Information Technology (ECIT) are investigating the possibility of sticking small sensors to members of the public to create potentially vast body-to-body networks (BBNs).

Researchers from Queen's University Belfast clarify that such sensors could create new ultra high bandwidth mobile Internet infrastructures and also reduce the density of mobile phone base stations. Their offering is to ask members of the public to form the backbone of powerful new mobile Internet networks by carrying wearable sensors. The engineers of ECIT are researching this further based on the rapidly developing science of body-centric communications.

Scientists believe that this research work would significantly improve mobile gaming and remote healthcare while also helping precision monitoring of athletes and real-time tactical training in team sports. Interacting with each other the new sensors would ensure data transmission and 'anytime, anywhere' mobile network connectivity.

Dr Simon Cotton, from ECIT's wireless communications research group, said a significant amount of research has already been undertaken into antennas and systems designed to share information across the surface of the human body. However, researchers still have to find out how that information can be transferred efficiently to an off-body location.

"If the idea takes off, BBNs help to alleviate public perceptions of adverse health associated with current networks and be more environmentally friendly due to the much lower power levels required for operation," said Dr Cotton. "Success in this field will not only bring major social benefits, it could also bring significant commercial rewards for those involved. Even though the market for wearable wireless sensors is still in its infancy, it is expected to grow to more than 400 million devices annually by 2014."

American economy exhibits unhealthy zombie look

The American economy is exhibiting an unhealthy zombie glow. Third-quarter GDP numbers, released just before the Halloween weekend, suggest worrisome imbalances rising again. The gain in real GDP was about equal to the growth in net imports and exceeded by the rise in inventories. Consumption was solid but government spending rose sharply as the savings rate fell. It’s not an altogether pretty picture.

In a well-balanced economy, consumption grows in tandem with overall GDP, with savings adequate to finance investment. Moreover, government spending growth is restrained, while inventories grow only as fast as consumption and the balance of payments deficit remains under control.

That’s not what the Bureau of Economic Analysis’s advance GDP report showed. Inventory growth was $116 billion compared to overall GDP’s real growth of $66 billion. In other words, the country is producing more stuff, but letting more of it pile up. Real final sales grew only 0.6 percent, and that growth was exceeded by a surge in imports.

Consumption growth was moderate, and while fixed investment grew marginally it was held down by a fall in housing investment after the April end of the home-buyer subsidies. In the meantime government spending grew rapidly, worsening an already unsustainable deficit, while the already inadequate savings rate declined.

America’s economic imbalances stem from over-expansive monetary and fiscal policies. With real interest rates negative and the government spending more than it takes in, savings are discouraged, imports surge and both raw and finished goods are stockpiled as commodity prices surge. Further quantitative easing by the Fed next week may exacerbate the problem.

Sure, some growth is better than a contraction. But the imbalances of inadequate savings, excessive imports and rising budget deficit all worsened in the quarter, and were joined by a bloating of inventories. That doesn’t signify an economy in good health and ripe for stock market investment. Rather it suggests that those entrusting their savings to the U.S. economy will find them eaten by the zombie lurking inside this feeble recovery.

A new search engine comes with what Google lacks "Blekko"

"Having great competitors is a huge benefit to us and everyone in the search space-it makes us all work harder, and at the end of the day everyone benefits from that," Google comment in an emailes statment.

A new search engine is being released a test version to rival Google with a key ingredient that is allegedly missing from the world’s top Internet search destination.

Blekko states that the Web is too saturated with spam-like websites, specially designed to pop up in Google's search results. Thus, Blekko Chief Executive Rich Skrenta says that the solution is to narrow searches to groups of websites that people, not computers, have pre-approved as being the best sources of information for particular topics.

Blekko has raised $24 million in funding with angel investors including Marc Andreessen, the creator of the first Web browser, and Ron Conway, who has invested in tech companies including Twitter, Foursquare and even Google.

Meantime, Greg Sterling, an Internet consultant and a contributing editor for the online blog Search Engine Land, doesn’t expect Blekko to displace Google any time soon. However, it indeed has a potential with its creative approach to search that might become popular as a secondary search engine for certain types of queries.

Blekko is launching with a special directory of websites that can provide spam-free results in seven general search categories: health, recipes, song lyrics, hotels, automobiles, colleges and personal finance.
