The different killer pandemics in history mostly originated from the animals and then contaminating the humans leading to massive death. Scientifically speaking, with the growth of human civilization, many people started flocking in one place, even with pet animals. Not all areas had proper sanitation and drainage systems. As a result, localities became the breeding ground of the diseases as well.
